This time, I woke up in a bed, still dressed only in underpants. A silky blanket covered my body, and a firm pillow supported my head.

Not bad.

I opened my eyes. I slept in a beautifully decorated chamber equipped with two wardrobes, a small bookshelf, a table, and a chair.

I rose from the bed and looked out through the window. Mist.

How unsurprising.

Someone knocked on the door.

“Who is it?” I asked.

“Room service.” The female voice came out as slightly distorted.

“One minute.” I searched for clothes, and found a decent pair of black trousers, matching shoes, and a fitting shirt embroidered with a symbol of a white rose. I dressed up, walked to the door, and opened them.

A maid stood behind them, holding a tray with food, a glass, and a pitcher of water. “Sorry to disturb you, Sire, but I’ve brought refreshments.”

I stepped aside, and she entered the room. “Please, close the door,” she said sweetly.

I did that.

She put the tray on the table. “Do you seriously not recognize me?” she asked in a voice that sounded a lot like Leyla’s.

Come to think of it, she had the same height as Leyla, somewhat similar facial features, and… oh. “I did not. How did you get here?”

“Well, at first, I followed you, obviously. Then I found out how servants come in from nearby villages and snuck in with them. Then I asked what rooms were recently prepared, took the tray, and went to the one room that was made today. But anyway, that doesn’t matter. We need to go.”

I shook my head. “I cannot do that right now.”

“What do you mean?” She clicked her tongue. “I’ve come to rescue you. You can’t exactly say no to that.”

“I’m here to find information, and I haven’t finished with that just yet. Until I do, I cannot leave.”

“Oh, sure, stupid me. I should just stay here and serve as a maid until your lordship decides that he is ready to be saved.” She paused for a second. “Are you out of your mind?”

“No. And you shouldn’t stay here. The staff might realize you aren’t one of them.”

She stared at me blankly for a few seconds. “When I prepared for this conversation, this wasn’t a scenario I considered. But… okay. I will come around in a few days to see if you haven’t changed your mind.”

“The minimum time I need is a week.”

“You aren’t of sane mind, so I won’t argue you with.” She sighed. “But one thing. I glimpsed the lady of this castle, and she gave me the chills. Like, the real chills. Your mom is pretty evil but in an honest, straightforward way. That woman isn’t like that. She’s worse, much worse, in a bad way.”

The door clicked open, and Leyla stepped away from me. “That will be all, Sire,” she said in a distorted voice.

Mother walked in through the door, her face bearing the expression of mild annoyance. “I do not remember ordering service to this room.”

“Apologies, Milady,” Leyla said and bowed deeply. “I must have mistaken the room.
